Solidica Awarded Ground Vehicle Materials Program by Army Research Laboratory

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 13 2010

Solidica today announced an award through the U.S. Army for the demonstration of a proof of concept in support of ground combat vehicle system health monitoring. In collaboration with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., Solidica will oversee the development of an embeddable structural health monitoring system integrated into lightweight vehicle armor. The program will include the design of a robust sensor network embedded inside the armor structure during the armor manufacturing process. The proof of concept will also evaluate the effect of the sensor network on armor performance, investigate the ability to detect and transmit armor panel impact and damage as well as identify strategies for linking SHM data to the Army logistics information system.

Solidica's Chorus(TM) vehicle health monitoring hub, a military spec product, will provide the foundation for collection, aggregation and transmission of armor panel data off the vehicle during live fire ballistic testing. The program includes analysis of signal data from sensed armor panels during ballistic testing at the Aberdeen Proving Ground.

"The ability to integrate previously unavailable armor health data into a complete asset health monitoring environment will be a generational leap forward in capability," said John McGinnis, Solidica's VP, Military Sales. "We envision a future where commanders at both the tactical and operational levels will have near real-time awareness on the status of their assets. Structural health monitoring is a key step in validating the fusion of materials and sensors in order to provide actionable information in the global battle space."
