Saab Sensis A-SMGCS Now Operational At Brisbane Airport

Airservices Australia, the air navigation service provider (ANSP) for Australia, has commissioned the Saab Sensis Advanced – Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) at Brisbane Airport for operational use. The A-SMGCS provides air traffic controllers the location and identification of all aircraft on the airport's runways and taxiways for improved safety and efficiency at Australia's third busiest airport.

The Saab Sensis A-SMGCS fuses surveillance data from Saab Sensis multilateration sensors, Surface Movement Radar (SMR) and VeeLo NextGen™ vehicle locators for the location and identification of all aircraft and vehicles operating on the airport's runways and taxiways. Further, the surveillance data is integrated with Saab Sensis' Safety Logic conflict detection and alerting algorithms to provide controllers with advanced visual and audible warning of potential runway incursion situations. At Brisbane, the Safety Logic uses Current and Predicted Separation algorithms for more precise alerting and fewer false alarms.

"The A-SMGCS enhances the reliability and efficiency of Brisbane's operations during bad weather and at night," said Jason Harfield, Airservices Executive General Manager Air Traffic Control. "The advanced warning of potential runway incursions adds an important layer of safety for Brisbane."

Saab Sensis A-SMGCS is in operation or being deployed to more than 40 of the busiest airports around the world, including sites in Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and Perth), Hong Kong, India and Saudi Arabiaand as the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's Airport Surface Detection Equipment, Model X (ASDE-X) program.

"Our A-SMGCS is designed to grow with Brisbane as the airport adds its third runway and continues to expand its infrastructure," said Ken Kaminski, senior vice president of Saab Sensis. "In addition, the A-SMGCS provides the precise surveillance needed for Airservices' Aerobahn airport surface manager to further address airport efficiency."
