UltraCell Corporation

UltraCell Corporation is based in Livermore California, USA. The company which was founded in 2002, produces advanced Reformed Methanol Micro Fuel Cell (RMFC) technology. This technology was originally invented at the U. S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). This expertise enables a breakthrough in micro fuel cell performance. UltraCell is the first to commercialize RMFC technology to provide clean renewable energy to power portable electronics for military applications.

UltraCell’s team has extensive knowledge in all aspects of fuel cells, including research, product development, manufacturing and customer applications. The company has developed new technologies and intellectual property in the field of methanol-based fuel cells and continues to innovate in this rapidly emerging field.

The U.S. Military is reliant on portable power for command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR) missions. Fuel cells offer several essential values to the military as opposed to batteries. The research and development centre for the US Army estimates that a typical US soldier carries approximately 30lb in batteries for military applications during a three-day field operation. A soldier would only need to carry an equivalent of 8lb in fuel cells for the same operation. On average fuel cells offer 70% in weight reduction.

Secondly, fuel cell technology offers soldiers with instant recharging ability. When a fuel cell runs out of energy, only the cartridge needs to be swapped to resume power. A battery, on the other hand, will either need to be recharged or completely replaced – meaning the soldier will have to carry spares.

UltraCell fuel cell technology provides a light-weight, high power, environmentally friendly alternative to batteries.

Two of UltraCell’s key products are the ultra-compact XX25 for power for mobile applications and the New XX55 for extreme mobile power for extended runtime.

UltraCell XX25™ fuel cell

The UltraCell XX25™ fuel cell delivers up to 25W of continuous maximum power, weighs just 2.7 lbs and is about the size of a hardback book, making it an ideal portable power source for the computing, communications and sensing devices used in critical mobile and remote operations ― such as military missions, emergency and disaster response, remote surveillance, and field research and exploration.

The XX25 has also passed a series of MIL-STD-810F tests — a standard approved for use by all Departments and Agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) — which measures the environmental reliability of equipment for military use.

Features and Benefits

  1. Easily recyclable compared to battery technology
  2. 70% approximately weight savings
  3. Enables weeks or even months of continuous runtime operation in the field
  4. Compatible with MIL-SPEC night vision equipment
  5. Emissions meet OSHA standards for indoor and in-vehicle use
  6. Cartridges and wearable power fuel sources are available to extend mission.

NEW!! XX55: Extreme Mobile Power

The XX55 reformed methanol fuel cell is the industry’s newest ultra compact and highly portable fuel cell. The XX55 is designed to meet the rugged off-grid power needs of performance demanding military users. The fuel cell is powered by Ultraclean, biodegradable methanol, providing quiet, nearly emissions-free operation. The system is the size of a typical hardbound book and four times lighter than the nearest portable fuel cell system in its power class.

Scaled from Ultracell’s award-winning and field proven XX55 fuel cell system, the XX55 delivers 50 watts of continuous power and up to 85 watts of peak power. It can run continuously off the grid for up to two weeks with a single hot swappable fuel tank. Its small size makes it inconspicuous, while its long life means that no servicing trips are needed for highly remote or covert surveillance applications. The XX55 is ideal for a wide variety of higher power electronic applications including radio and satellite communication gear, remote or mobile surveillance systems and laptop computers and battery charging.

Features and Benefits

  1. Operates in many different orientations for maximum flexibility
  2. Safe for indoor and in-vehicle use
  3. 70% or more weight savings for a 72 hour mission
  4. Operates at high altitude and in cold temperatures
  5. Extended runtime: Hot swappable cartridges and optional long runtime external fuel tanks
  6. Powers different devices at different voltages with application-specific tethers
  7. 50 watts of continuous power and up to 85 watts of peak power
  8. Smart timer that configures the XX55 to turn off / turn on modes
